By 1953 workers at Climax had an expanded hospital and school, a lighted baseball field, a full shopping center with a grocery store, and the first commercial television service in central Colorado. The 1950s were a golden age for Climax Molybdenum.

Most of which lived in Leadville after 1959, when a strike nearly shut down the town. Essentially a company town, Climax once had a school, hospital and housing for employees.
The Climax deposit is one of a number of large molybdenum deposits in central Colorado and northern New Mexico. Other molybdenum deposits in the region include the Questa mine in New Mexico, and the Henderson and Urad mines near Empire, Colorado .

Although the town was razed in 1962 to make room for the expansion of the Climax Molybdenum Mine, the Climax post office continued operation from December 5, 1917 until January 4, 1974. Climax had the highest elevation post office in the United States from April 1, 1919 to January 1, 1974.
