Porcelain tiles are vitreous ceramic products made of clay (kaolin and ball clay), feldspar and sand. The industrial production of these tiles consists of milling and homogenization, uniaxial pressing at 40–50 MPa and fast firing at 1180–1220 °C [1, 2].Porcelain tiles are known to have a high flexural strength of greater than 35 ± 2 MPa, …
The presence of feldspar gives arkose a pink or reddish color. Greywacke: Greywacke is a type of sandstone that contains a mix of quartz, feldspar, and rock fragments. Ball clay. 25.0. Kaolin. 25.0. Feldspar or Nepheline Syenite. 25.0. At cone 10 much less feldspar is needed. Thus there is more room for clay and silica in the recipe. If you decide to reduce the ball clay in favor of kaolin, remember that the former contributes quite a bit of quartz and thus glazes might craze.

Feldspars are important ingredients in clay bodies and glazes. In both applications, their primary function is to supply fluxes to the formulations, but they also provide additional alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2). Feldspars are naturally occurring minerals and are generally classified as either potash (potassium) or soda (sodium) …

Feldspars are the most common minerals at the Earth's surface. In fact, if the entire composition of the Earth's crust were regarded as a single mineral, it would calculate out almost exactly as a feldspar. The …
556.74. Theoretically speaking, the term 'feldspar' refers to a family of minerals with a specific crystalline presence. However actual feldspar powders are made from crushed crystalline rock containing a mixture of aluminum silicates of sodium and potassium (with minor amounts of lithium or calcium). They normally contain 10-15% alkali (K 2 O ...
Consider two balls of equal weight but of different specific gravity, for instance a 10 gram gold ball and a 10 gram silver ball. The gold ball has a sg of 19.3, while silver has a sg of 10.5. Because gold has a sg that is almost twice as much as silver, you can imagine that the 10 gram gold ball will be smaller than the 10 gram silver ball.

At cone 10 oxidation this has about 5% porosity (the ball clay contributes enough iron that porosity drops to 2% in reduction). While an addition of feldspar would cut this somewhat, only more silica will increase thermal expansion enough to put the squeeze on glazes to prevent crazing like this. Links
The effect of ball milling on filler particle size and surface area. The effect of ball milling for hours at 320 rpm in the presence of the inorganic grinding agent on the particle size of kaolin and feldspar is presented in Figure 1; it is compared with the untreated counterpart. It is clear that the average particle size for both minerals was …

Sources of Feldspar. Historically, the most important source of moonstone has been Ceylon, where it is found in many areas as rolled, rounded pebbles in the gem gravels with spinel and corundum. In addition, it occurs in dikes in several places on Ceylon, notably in the central and southern provinces.

Ball clays and kaolin are both primarily kaolinite in most cases. A small amount to significant fractions of quartz are also found. If the chemical composition of pure kaolinite powder (39.5% alumina, 46.5% silica, 14% water) is compared to the composition of a typical kaolin or ball clay, the presence of silica is apparent.

There is another up-side of ball clay worth mentioning. Ball clays contain free silica, so if there is significant ball clay in a recipe the silica can be reduced leaving room to add more clay for plasticity or feldspar for maturity. So the easiest way to increase the plasticity of the standard '25 Porcelain' is to add 2%-3% raw bentonite.
Hard-rock mining for feldspars is done by open-pit methods, either by the mine owner or by contractors. After the feldspar ore is drilled and blasted, secondary breakage is performed with a conventional drop ball. Ore is then loaded with a hydraulic shovel onto trucks and hauled to the crushing plant, which is adjacent to the flotation plant.
