Antimony is an effective method of strengthening lead. Lead-antimony alloy can be strengthened by quenching. Small amounts of arsenic have particularly strong effects on the age-hardening response of such alloys. Heat treating and rapid quenching prior to aging enhance these effects. The percentage of antimony greatly effects the amount of time ...Web

I shoot WW in my 45-110 Sharps paper patch. It may not be a target grade load but it works. The paper patch makes any bullet more forgiving. BHN Hardness of common scrap lead.Web

The blocks sit on the side of the pot to heat while the lead is melting. By the time the lead is molten and fluxed the mould is at the proper heat for casting. If using aluminum blocks, I will sometimes dip a corner or leading edge into the molten lead to heat the mould as-in when switching to a different mould or ball size.Web
Total lead bullets are often used in older cartridges which were designed from their inception to use cast lead bullets – eg, the .45-70, and similar 19th century cartridges. Some handgun cartridges also use solid lead bullets (eg, .45 Colt, .44-40, .38 Special), and most .22LR rounds are solid or hollow point lead, with perhaps only a minor ...Web

For instance, I shoot WW 15 bore balls (.677") from my 14 bore rifle, same patch as larger pure lead balls (.682"). Hardened lead shot will not damage your bore- shot of any lead hardness. Hardened lead is an alloy of lead and antimony. This alloy is used for bare-lead projectiles, providing better expansion control and less fouling in barrels than unalloyed lead. Alloys that exhibit precipitation hardening typically are less susceptible to over aging and therefore are more stable with time than alloys hardened by GP zones. Lead-calcium and lead-strontium alloys have been observed to age harden through discontinuous precipitation of a second phase Pb-Ca and Pb-Sr in lead-strontium alloys as grain ...Web

The lead typically used in bullets is mushy as we all know. Hardcast lead used in bullets is much harder and designed to maintain its shape even when encountering bone. And hardcast lead is still inexpensive since it is roughly 94% lead and the remaining metals (antimony and tin) are fairly inexpensive as well.Web
The mechanical properties of pure grades of lead are listed in Table 15.2 [15.1, 15.2, 15.3].The near ambient temperatures at which lead and its alloys are used correspond to high homologous temperatures ((T/T_{text{M}}approx 0.5) or higher) for lead and therefore significant diffusion can occur.Consequently, the mechanical properties are …Web

Mac I've been using the dump from the mold to a bucket of water for years, works well. A suggestion, put some sort of rag, natural fiber, in the bucket to cushion the bullets when you start getting a bunch on the bottom. Works like a charm for 45-70, 405 Win., 30-06, 243 Win. and 300 grain 45 Colt.Web
Taking the example of the chip in your picture (RHFAC14A - datasheet,) they aren't always in the flat package with long leads (FPC-14.)They are also available in DILC-14, which looks more like a standard DIP-14. So, the flat, long leaded style isn't a requirement of the radiation hardening.Web
