Tonight I saw that some guy is advertising a Micro Mill DSLS 3000 4-axis CNC mill for $800 with tooling, controller, and Mach 3. He claims it's like new. I have no need of this thing, but it retails for $3700, and I assume that software could also be used for a lathe. It might be a nice way to learn about CNC milling on the cheap.

Make sure you're downloading the correct xml as I believe there's quite a difference between xml's for the Taig 2000 and the Taig DSLS 3000 systems. I'm not at all familiar with the 2000 system but it is not the same controller setup at all as the 3000 and with the 2000, I think you need some sort of "pulse- adapter" to run the 2000 with Mach 3.

607. USB will not work no matter what. The PCMCIA will work with some laptops, but it's your best shot. It's the closes you will get to a true parallel port. I will buy 2 of these cards myself (a different brand though) for my mill and lathe. You don't really have any other choice except getting a stationary computer.
